What is the loud humming or rattling from my refrigerator?
Short answer
A new noise from a built-in in an Encinitas kitchen comes from behind the grille far more often than from inside the cabinet, and the coast decides which part it is.
Why we start there
Two things account for most of it: the condenser fan, which rattles once debris gets to the blade and whines as its bearing goes, and the compressor mounts, which go hard with age and pass a low hum straight into the joinery around the opening. Near the water the fan is the one we find more often. Salt-laden air on the ocean side of the 101 works on the bearing and the shaft, and a fan gets audibly rough here long before it gets rough anywhere dry inland. That is a warning worth taking, because a fan that eventually seizes takes the cooling with it.
What happens next
Listen for where the noise sits in the cycle. A rattle that starts and stops with the cooling is almost always the condenser fan striking something it has picked up, or a blade out of balance. A steady low hum that seems to come out of the cabinets rather than the appliance is compressor mounts that have gone hard, and it is more of a nuisance than a fault. A high whine that rises over weeks is a bearing, and that one has a deadline attached.

When a built-in was fitted into an opening cut into older cabinetry, the surround is often in direct contact with the unit rather than shimmed off it, so ordinary compressor vibration goes into the joinery and comes out of the wall as a hum three rooms away. We check the mounting and clearances before we condemn anything mechanical, and that alone has quieted a number of these houses.
