Encinitas Sub-Zero ExpertsEncinitas, CA

Common fault

Why is my Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling?

Short answer

If the freezer is still hard-frozen while the refrigerator side has climbed, your compressor is fine. Sub-Zero built-ins run two independent sealed systems that never trade air, so a working freezer rules out the expensive answer before anyone drives over.

Why we start there

The fault is on the refrigerator side: a stopped evaporator fan, a defrost failure that has iced its own coil solid, or a thermistor reporting a temperature the cabinet is not actually at. In Encinitas we check one thing ahead of those. On the ocean side of Coast Highway 101 the condenser fins collect a salt film that holds dust, and a coil that cannot reject heat shows up first as a fresh-food compartment drifting warm through the afternoon and recovering overnight.

What happens next

The order we work in is the cheap causes first, because on this equipment they are also the likely ones. Grille off and condenser assessed, then a temperature taken at the evaporator coil rather than read off the panel, then the evaporator fan on the refrigerator side, then defrost heater resistance and the thermistor, then the door gasket and its closing pull. Most of what we find in Encinitas is in the first three of those, and most of it finishes in the same visit.

Where you live in Encinitas changes what the symptom pattern means. A Leucadia or Old Encinitas kitchen sits under the marine layer for weeks at a stretch in late spring and rarely gets hot, so a unit failing there is usually failing on corroded metal: fin stock going chalky, a condenser fan bearing stiffening, hardware giving up behind the grille. In Olivenhain and on the inland side of I-5 the overcast burns off by midday and the kitchen runs warm until evening, so what we find is a compressor working long duty cycles against a coil that is only partly restricted. Both owners describe a warm refrigerator on the phone. They are not the same repair.

If that matches what yours is doing, say so when you call — it decides which parts come on the van.

We had been chipping ice out of the freezer every couple of weeks for months. Turned out the drain line got squashed when the cabinets went in around the column back in the remodel. He rerouted it with new tubing. No heater, no big part, hasn't frosted since.

Our wine column sits in the pantry off the garage out in Olivenhain and it holds fine all night then climbs by dinner. He left a thermometer down at bottle level for the afternoon rather than trusting the display, found the damper on the upper zone. Fixed in one trip.

Ice was coming out hollow and half the size it should be. I assumed the ice maker was shot. He measured the water pressure first, filter was long overdue and the inlet valve was scaled up. Two parts and no module. Cubes are normal again.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

  1. What should I have ready when I call, and what do you need to get to the appliance?

Model number if the plate is reachable, which compartment is wrong, whether the freezer is still hard-frozen, when it started, and any code showing. Then access: parking on the beach-side blocks, stairs up to the kitchen, and in Olivenhain the gate at the end of a long driveway. And leave the doors shut until we arrive; opening a warm compartment only makes the reading worse.
